ha ha, yah, i think the "overpowering" bit was definitely part of the reason they built it, although "inspiring" would be the glass-half-full take on that. who knows -- those roaring-20s pre-Depression rich people are hard to fathom.
and even though the pic turned out shadowy and ominous-looking, & I like it for that, it was a bright sunny day, quite cheerful really -- my camera phone just couldn't handle all the sunshine...
the building is called the "Cathedral of Learning" -- typical of the ever-pragmatic Pittsburgh sensibility, and also, to my mind, typical of the deliberate avoidance of spirituality in modern higher education. the chapel directly across the campus green is completely dwarfed by this behemoth... it is an interesting building though (here's a Wikipedia entry on it).
Thanks for the link! Now from further away I can see how it's a modern take on a cathedral. It's definitely unlike any university building I've ever been in. The interior is remarkable. The commons room, my god!
yah, i definitely like the commons room, and my undergrad college campus was all collegiate gothic or modern interpretations of gothic, so this building at my grad school makes me feel right at home! :)
thanks! i do like how it turned out, although in fact it was a cheery sunny day and I didn't intend to take an ominous picture! just goes to show how even mistakes can turn out lovely for different reasons
I do like the school, although of course it's different being a grad student there (as opposed to undergrad), and being in the online/distance program to boot. I actually had a terrible class last night, the worst experience of my whole program thus far, but that particular professor's leaving, which I think is for the best, although I do like her as a person. but anyway -- mostly i've had good experiences with Pitt!!
