You can waive your jury duty - I've done it twice. I think financial hardhip definitely qualifies you.
When I finally did go, I only went for about four days. I sat for the first few, and on the last day I went in with a group of others for selection and my answers didn't fit the profile they were looking for so they let me go.
Don't be worried about being honest or being yourself. I think part of the faith I have left in our jury system is that people don't uniformly make decisions. That said, you might get a really boring larceny case or something :P
Hmm, it's been a long time, but if I remember correctly there were instructions on the back of the letter, or some such thing. There has to at least be a phone number?
I waived it once, but I kind of served twice already. The first one was a Phone Harassment Case. The second time was in Kent and I almost got on a case, but over lunch the lawyers came to an agreement and they released us from any further jury duty. All in all, a total of 4 days. I am glad to do my Civic Duty, so this and Voting make me feel that my decisions do count in a more public capacity.
