What is the right way to be a successful manager to somebody in a work environment? You don't want to be the stern "no fun on company time, I'm not your friend, I'm just your boss" type, nor do you want to be the "I'm your best friend on the whole wide world and I'm going to forward you this dirty joke" type. If you act more towards the latter

You can have both. A Laugh and a Joke when YOU feel it is appropiate, thats why your the Manager after all, but when someone steps out of line, I normally give them THE LOOK, if that does nto work take them to one side and tell them they pushing thier luck. All people test boundaries, you need to tell them where that boundry is.
