Call avoidance is very rarely misinterpretted, but it does, pretty invariably, lead to animosity which, pretty invariably, leads to drama. Of course, if you've had the sit-down chat that goes like, "Golly, I think you're a great guy, but I'm just not interested so (and I mean this in the nicest possible way) please stop calling me," and he's still not getting it, then avoiding his calls may be the way to go.

Or change your number and if he ever tracks you down, have tropical music playing in the back and say you've moved to Tahiti.
