That's a fascinating way to think about it, and not one I had considered before. Thanks!

It struck me really after reading all those comments that repeatedly told the OP that "Well done, and Upton deserved that takedown", which was so bizarre. They really acted as if she had violated something sacred.

Right. I'm 5'4" and the measurements these girls aspire to seem ridiculous. But that's the whole point, isn't it -- if it was something mainstream aspired to, it wouldn't take dedication. Hence the dismissal of Upton as "achievable", even though she's 5'11" and her measurements are 36-25-34, which is NOT achievable to most people.

I really like this post, and it makes me think a lot about the moral failings often ascribed to fat bodies -- and not just on thinspo sites.

Of course, thinspo reflect and exaggerate the existing societal values -- just like the mystics reflect and exaggerate Christian ideals. But they really bring to the fore the notion that fatness is not about health or any other concern-trolling nonsense -- it's about morality, and the assumption that moral failures can be made visible, which I guess is a tempting if stupid concept?

Yeah, and to some extent, I'd rather deal with that kind of demonization of my body, because it's transparently stupid and trollish than deal with the more mainstream cleaned up versions, which force me to actually defend myself constantly against equally stupid concern trolling that's wearing some kind of health and wellness mask.

Yes, absolutely. My latest fave of concern-trolling is vanity sizing: apparently, it's not only annoying because one cannot find clothes that fit easily, but also because fat people might fit into smaller sizes and NOT REALIZE HOW FAT THEY REALLY ARE, omg, it's so dangerous! I should probably write a post about that, huh.
