At age 20, I was rail thin and wore a size 8. At age 50, I am "average" -- neither thin nor fat -- and still wear a size 8, obviously not the *same* size 8. According to Zara's size charts, I'd be a 14.
While I'm indifferent as to the number (I have no problem grabbing 12s and 14s off the rack in the UK, where sizing is different, or in vintage stores), I agree thoroughly with your analysis. It's MY vanity that's changed the size? I should be taken down a couple of notches to have the privilege of shopping in your store, Zara? Aren't you signalling that I'm not worthy to be your customer?
Whatever. There are other places that sell clothes I want to wear.
Funnily enough, in college I was told by a girl I assumed would know that vanity sizing was a thing for expensive stores (like, you're paying for the privilege of being told you're small size), but granted, we were not talking Zara level of expensive.
I've been thinking about this. Basically, my favorite size systems are stores that have their own, because then I don't even look at the sizes before looking at the chart, and that's probably the best practice anyhow.
And, I wish all these people who were SO concerned about other people's fatness would support actual health programs rather than just trolling people. But, I'm 98% they don't actually care about actual systemic issues or anything like that; they're just trolling.
