perhaps as a gaymo my advice is less valid but i think starting to think about having kids on your own and saving up is a good idea. you'd figure out the hows along the way but it's a great time to start saving anyway AND kids are pricey no matter if you're in a relationship or not. a cousin of mine had a baby last summer after coming to the same conclusion. she was 36 or 37 i think and she's super duper happy that she had her daugher. i'm sure it'll be tough but if it's what you want and you know that then you have to cover all the bases. k. two cents done.

i've totally thought the same but now that i'm applying for phds i've been able to temporarily shut that corner of my brain down. usually it screams for babies at top volume.

Oh, I don't think your opinion is less valid at all! I think really anyone, regardless of orientation, could find themselves wanting to do this sort of thing partnerless, or could end up needing "reproductive facilitation" of some kind even if they have a partner. So it's a good idea to plan and save. And I'm not there YET, but man, 36 or 37 will be here sooner than I think so I'd rather have the option than be like, "uh-oh, I'm broke".

Hmm...if only I wanted a PhD, I could perhaps also shut off the baby-crazy part of my brain. Sigh.

I think it's fantastic that you are thinking ahead - it just goes to show that you are a woman who knows what you want and are prepared to go after it. A friend once told me that whatever you think you are going to want in 5 years, you should start now because sometimes it takes a while - and I think that's right on. You will make a great mom one day, regardless of whether or not you have a partner, but I do hope you find someone to have them with. But I agree with your other friend, kids are expensive either way, so it's great to start to saving now. Best of luck :-) And sorry to hear about your former student.
