When Jared Padalecki arrived in Beavertown, he was fourteen and not quite fully grown. He was all gangly limbs and wild hair and he was an orphan.

His mother had passed away five years ago and his father died six months ago.

It had taken the ladies circle six months to get in touch with his uncle Jim, the only living relative Jared had. Apparently, uncle Jim was an anti-social curmudgeon who kept to himself and didn’t answer phone-calls from numbers he didn’t know, nor did he open any mail that had the word URGENT written on them in bright red. Finally the ladies had sent him an old fashioned telegram which had gotten them the result they wanted, namely to get Jared off their hands.

Jared wasn’t hurt by their obvious desire to get rid of him, he knew the trouble the ladies had gone through just to find him a place to stay while they tried to get in touch with his uncle. He was excited to go live with this uncle he had never met, even though it looked like that Jim Beaver only said yes under duress.

This was going to be an adventure.

---

Jensen Ackles wondered if what they were saying was really true.

Could it be that old man Beaver was taking in a kid?

Jensen was going to find out.

He walked out of the home. He was old enough by now that the couple who oversaw the place didn’t fuss much about the comings and goings of the older kids. When you turned fourteen, you got certain freedoms. One of them was being able to run around town from after breakfast till dinnertime. Another was staying up till ten. The younger kids had to be in bed by eight thirty.

Jensen took every advantage he could of his freedoms.

It wasn’t bad, being an orphan and living at the home, but he wanted freedom. He had plans for when he turned eighteen. Then he would walk out of that door for the last time and not look back. He would be going on an adventure.

But now, he had to find out if the rumors were true.

---

“I’m really glad you wanted to have me Uncle Jim. I would have been sad if I wouldn’t have had a chance to meet you and to get to know you.”

“Yeah, well. You can do what you want as long as you don’t disturb me. I need my quiet.” Jim Beaver was not sure what to make of his nephew. He had not seen his half-sister since she left Beavertown to marry that good-for-nothing Polack and he had not wanted to have anything to do with their kid. He must have agreed to take the kid in a fit of madness. That had to be it. He had not had a moment of peace in the five days since the kid got here.

“Really uncle, I can do whatever I want to do?” Jared was bouncing where he stood in his uncle’s study.
“Yes, go, just go and leave me in peace!” Jim nearly shouted.

“Oh uncle, you’re the best uncle ever!” Jared said as he hugged his sourpuss uncle and ran out of the room. He had permission to do the thing he had wished to do since he got here and that was to see the town; to go on an adventure!

---

Jensen stood on the stoop. It had taken him five days to gather up the courage to knock on Old Man Beaver’s door to ask about this kid. One did not just show up at Beaver’s door. The guy was famous for pulling out a shotgun and even firing it if someone dared to interrupt his solitude.

He was about to knock when the door was pulled open and someone literally smashed into him, sending them both toppling down the steps to lie on the sidewalk.

“Woah there! Watch where you’re going!” Jensen said as he picked himself up and checked for any broken bones.

“Oh sorry, I’m so sorry. I didn’t realize anybody would be standing there. There haven’t been any visitors since I came and I didn’t think that it would change anytime soon. Are you OK?” A human beanpole was all over Jensen, seemingly to find out if he was hurt.

“Yeah I am. No thanks to you, Stretch.” Jensen grumbled.

So this was the kid. He did not look too bad, even though he seemed really clumsy.

“Oh good! I’m Jared by the way, nice to meet you.”

“Jensen”

“Oh cool! You know, you’re the first person I’ve met since I got here. I mean apart from my uncle.” Jared enthused.

“You’ve not seen anybody since you arrived? Has Old Man Beaver kept you locked in the basement or something?” Jensen knew the guy was eccentric, but this was really something.

“No, nothing like that. Of course I’ve met Sam - she cooks for Uncle Jim. No, just that I’ve been exploring the house and I’ve not been out to explore the town and meet the people. But now I’ve got permission to do whatever I want so I’m off on an adventure. Wanna come with me? You could be my local guide!” Jared said and grabbed Jensen’s hand.

Jensen let himself be dragged a couple of steps until he decided that maybe it would not be too bad showing this kid around town.

---

“Look who that is Jared” Jensen whispered and pointed towards a short, stocky man who was walking along the quay from a nice looking boat he had sailed on into town.

The boys were on one of Jared’s adventures. There had been different adventures every day for eight weeks and Jensen was not bored at all. In fact he had only been back at the home to sleep. He left before breakfast and came back just before curfew. Being with Jared was the best thing that had happened to him since he arrived at the home. He wasn’t even counting the days till he turned eighteen like he had done before, he had lost count the third day after he met Jared and he didn’t regret any of it.

“Who is it?” Jared was curious. He felt he was lucky to have met Jensen because the other boy knew everything about Beavertown. Jensen made the adventures so much more fun than if Jared had been on his own. Jensen was his best friend and would be for forever, of that Jared was more than sure. When Jared turned eighteen, he would join Jensen on his awesome adventure and they would travel all over. Even though Jensen did not know of this plan, Jared did not doubt that he would be welcomed. They were two peas in a pod; both Sam and his Uncle Jim said so.

“That’s Mr. Sheppard.” Jensen said knowingly.

“Who’s Mr. Sheppard?” Jared asked.

“They say that he and Old Man Beaver were very close before Mr. Sheppard left town. They say that he left town because he was heartbroken.” Jensen whispered. The boys had started following Mr. Sheppard to see where he ended up. This was big news.

“Why would he be heartbroken?” Jared had no clue what Jensen was talking about.

“Cause Old Man Beaver didn’t want to leave with him,” Jensen glanced at Jared and saw bewilderment in his eyes, “they were boyfriends!” he said in an exasperated tone.

“Boyfriends?” Jared was perplexed. He had never heard of anything like that before. His parents had never talked about Uncle Jim. In fact, he had not known that he had an uncle until the ladies in the ladies circle had told him he was going to live with his Uncle Beaver six months after his dad died. He had not heard about boyfriends from the ladies circle either, so he did not understand what Jensen was talking about.

“Yes, like when a man and a woman get married to have a family, but with two men who can’t of course have a baby. Hey, do you think he came back to try to get back with your uncle?” Jensen saw that Mr. Sheppard had gone into his old house, the house that had been empty for more than fifteen years. This was really big, he needed to get back to the home and tell Mama Sam and Papa Jeff about it.

“Boyfriends?” Jared was still stuck on the fact that two men could be in a relationship. That was really awesome. He did not notice that they had stopped walking and were standing across the road from Jensen’s house. He was stuck in a dream world where everything seemed to be sunshine, roses and Jensen.

Jensen turned towards Jared, about to ask him if he was thick or something, when he realized that actions really spoke louder than words.

“Yes,” he said, “like this,” and grabbed Jared’s face and kissed him. Just a small peck on the lips, but it was a kiss all the same.

“Oh!” Jared smiled and kissed Jensen back. “Hey, we need to make sure they get back together! I’m sure that Uncle Jim would be much happier and not need as much quiet if he had someone like you in his life”

“What do you mean?” Jensen was puzzled.

“I mean a boyfriend. Like you are to me?” the last part was said hesitantly.

“Oh! Yes, I’m sure he would be. Common, let’s go!” Jensen smiled as he grabbed Jared’s hand and ran towards the Beaver house. This would be a major adventure, but at least he would have Jared by his side; Jared, who was his best friend in the whole wide world - best friend and now his boyfriend.
