It's academic: TV cures loneliness.Four new studies by the University at Buffalo and Miami University of Ohio found that watching TV can drive away feelings of loneliness and rejection. The studies are reported in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology and suggest that watching TV provides viewers with the illusion that their social needs ( Read more... )

Who knew we were nothing but Rhesus monkey babies grabbing on to the fur covered pole.

This loses me. I only know of the cloth and wire mother experiments.

Actually, I have no idea what we're talking about.

I often don't make sense, it comes with old age and too much alcohol. The cloth/wire and fur/pole are pretty much the same sets of experiments. Different teams I think.

I think I'm just trying to say that we find the things we need any way we can. Fur/Cloth are better than no other support system. TV friends are better than acknowledging that you have no friends.

Sadly that does make sense, but not as much as getting off the couch and making some new real friends. I know it's always more complex than that, but really now.

This would explain why my collection of season sets grew and grew while I was helping with my Grandmother - after all, if my family were my only social circle, I'd probably crack and go crazy.

but what does this mean? who's telling the truth? or maybe lonely people watch more tv precisely because it 'cures loneliness.'

I'd like to think it's a chicken vs egg argument. Maybe lonely people are satisfied with the illusion of belonging TV gives them!

Inversely, I prefer committing to TV shows than to actual people! I can allow myself to become immersed in TV at my own pace and i am not pressured to love it back. I can drop it in a second should it disappoint me in any way, or suspend my disbelief in the form of fanfiction so that things go my way. I love being married to tv!

I never thought of it that way. This WOULD explain my obsession with writing for these universes - it's my way of saying 'No! I'm not ready to let you go!'

...Great, now I'm putting myself in the position of the crazy jealous ex. Why have I not been institutionalized yet?
