Winter in Monterey, Cannery Row - it's gray as far as the eye can see and a smell of kelp mixed with baked goods hangs in the air. You walk down Cannery Row past all the chintzy shops and the chain restaurants and the good, old ones, and end up with a pressed penny in your pocket and a chocolate covered rocky road candy. That day we saw a little seal poke his (her?) head up out of the water close to us off the pier, just a curious dot on a silver page. We stayed on the third floor of a hotel just overlooking the ocean, which we couldn't see anyway, but we could hear, like a low thrum. The absence of seagull cries settled at night, we knew somewhere they nested silent but we didn't know where.
It doesn't snow here in Monterey, even at Christmas, or ever, but the absence of snow is perfectly okay.
In the Park Street station of the T in Boston there are a lot of buskers. So far I've witnessed: an old man playing Spanish guitar; a young black woman singing folk songs; a teenager playing classical violin; a middle-aged Japanese dude playing electric guitar with some kind of complicated audio set up and a backing tape; and an old Chinese man playing an erhu (just the other day!). There's been more, but I'm so often in a rush making a connection between the red and green line that I don't have time to listen or notice. I'm hoping to catch an accordion someday.
hmm, well luckily you said it can be boring places too, but i'm going to brainstorm a bit and think of some stuff and let you know some places i think are worth describing, then you can tell me if you need more description..or something.
As much as I love New York City, walking through Times Square is a nightmare. Sure, there's the big, bright billboards overhead, advertising Broadway musicals and the season premieres of tv shows, and the new spring collection from assorted fashion labels. And all the stores, selling overpriced souvenirs (really, one could stick NEW YORK CITY on anything and people would buy it) are admittedly fun to look in. Everyone and everything seems to be animated
