it's funny. unlike jesse, i have always hated geocities. the pages always took forever to load and they looked like shit whenever they finally did load. despite this, however, i find myself a little sad they are shutting down and have been nostalgically reminiscing about the days when i would curse any link i clicked on that took me to a geocities ( Read more... )

Hahahahaha, I was pretty much thinking this exactly! Geocities hosted some of the worst websites ever, but it was one of the first Big Free Webspace providers out there that I can remember. Perhaps it opened a lot of doors for people in letting them dabble in web design. Perhaps it lead to bigger and better things.

So, ya know, we can be thankful for it while still being glad we've moved on.

Aw, I remember geocities! Didn't they have a cute naming convention for their websites? Like the URL was actually part of some world?

i never actually had a geocities site and i really don't remember. most of my memories of it involve sitting there forever waiting for the website to load and eventually giving up.
