Moving to (mostly) friends-only

Just FYI, from here on I intend to make most of my journal updates that have any kind of personal information in them friends-only. This is not because of any kind of motivating event or other er... nasty things happening. (And I don't really want to wait for something nasty to happen to become the motivational force behind this decision ( Read more... )

Oh, I wouldn't say it's sad or anything. Just prudent. After all, you probably wouldn't go and spout your life story to some random person on the street, eh. The internet isn't much different. :/

I learned about a year or so ago that Livejournal is not a `journal' in the typical sense of the word. It is not a `diary,' because, like you said, random strangers can pop in and chew you out over something you've written. In my personal case, I just made sure to be selective about what I post, and to keep the other comments to myself, and not even put them up as a private entry. In other peoples' journals, it seems everyone is taking the `friends only' approach instead. To me, this is far more unfriendly than simply omitting content that causes a hostile response. If you want to share something deeply personal with someone close to you, I personally recommend e-mails and telephone calls. But it's up to you whether or not you choose to do the `friends only' route or not.
