After reading through the press release my initial reactions are:
  • So what exactly are we supposed to be celebrating on July 4th?
  • Does "Loyalty Day" stike anyone ( Read more... )

Well, the press release was issued yesterday, so I imagine it's "in spite of." There isn't a pure motive anywhere in that idiot's body.

I hate to break it to you, but this is not Bush's invention:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loyalty_Day

It became an official holiday in 1958.

Good to know, though his language still rankles me.

Yep, I agree-- Although I don't think we need yet another holiday to celebrate patriotism in this country, it's his totally idiotic unfortunate wording and linking to the Revolution times in this country's history that just make my brain hurt. It all smacks of pre-1958 McCarthyist paranoid thinking to me.

Meh. I suppose you're right... and Bush certainly likes to proclaim every obscure official US holidays. (I suppose he views this as one of his vital roles as president.)

Still, I do find pretty-much revolting anything that comes out of the man's mouth. Compare Bush's declaration with one released by Clinton when he was in office.

Of note: The not-so-subtle implication in Bush's proclamation that anyone who doesn't fly a flag today is not showing loyalty to the country. (Also keeping in mind that the original declaration passed in congress in 1958 of Loyalty Day calls upon government agencies to fly the flag on this day, and says nothing of the general citizenship of the country other than they should celebrate appropriately.)

I'm going to "celebrate" Loyalty Day[1] the same way I "celebrate" Labor Day and Presidents' Day.

[1] Although Bush hasn't come out and said it, I get the impression that he'd like to really call the holiday "Loyalty to the Republican Party Day".
