As you can see, I'm still quite flummoxed by all the inserting images and lj cuts and such. I'm still fumbling with getting it right. Thus, it appears, disappears, then reappears, but still not quite right. Oh, the hell with it!

Nemo to Orca!! Surely not! It's true about the age thing. When I was in my thirties, when I ran as much as I am now, I could eat anything and be slim. Of course, I've never been what one would call tiny. My metabolism is definitely slower than it was those many years ago.

As for lunch, let's see--anything you can think of that a nice private college would serve in its student cafeteria. One can, of course, eat light (salads, carrot sticks, ice water), but where's the fun in that?

Thanks for the good luck. It's not a race, just a fun ride with my cycling pals.

Bless you, my child, for the sweet lies! Yes, the camera adds about 10 pounds, but then again, if I weren't a good 25 pounds overweight, I wouldn't really notice it, would I? Oh, well. Yesterday I ran in a lovely little rain for my 3.7 mile out and back, and I felt so good as I ran and when I finished it! It's wonderfully theraputic, moreso even than when I was younger. I think I'm just trying to stave off the inevitable, but let's not think about that now . . .

Believe it or not, my child, I ran in the 1985 St. Louis Marathon! Oh, I was in great shape in those days! It was the only marathon I ever did, and not too long after that I stopped running. Goal-oriented, you see.

I know what you mean about being frustrated with your body. In January I developed a case of plantar fasciitis in my left foot, but it's healed now. The result is that I have a slightly fallen arch that I can compensate for with orthotics in my running shoes. As my grandfather used to say, "It's hell to get old."

I hope you get out there again. Running is wonderful. Poor Participia has bad knees, so we walk and cycle a bit together.

I'm exhausted just reading all of this!
But, in my defense, I live on the third floor of an old Creole townhouse, and it's impossible to drive in New Orleans, so I do a lot of walking.
Lots of hauling things up and down the stairs, too.

Truly, the camera adds lbs.-- and cycling gear is not very slimming in appearance. So, I leave you with a quote from James Beard:

"Life is too short to eat boring food!"

And on that note, I bid you goodnight, and am off to have that chocolate cake that's calling to me from the kitchen!

"Life is too short to eat boring food!"

Truer words were never spoken, my child! Thank you for that. And I hope you enjoyed that chocolate cake! I cannot imagine living in a better city for food than yours.

I'm glad you enjoyed one of my favorite food-related quotes, and yes, the cake was excellent.
:)

Ah, New Orleans. Even the air is caloric!

And now, Masterpeas Theater presents...

Chariots of Nuns.

[insert Vangelis soundtrack here]

Have a fabulous riding experience! And really, when you put that way, "gristle and bone" does not sound very attractive to me.

Lovely avatar, my child! A self-portrait, perhaps? Thank you for the good wishes. And yes, I prefer my women a bit on the zaftig side, myself ;)!

Catching up with some older posts...nice photos and someone knew where to stand to take capture the grand approach. ;)

S (for whom I am not responsible) has a few questions: were you misinformed about the weather? You appear to be dressed for a cold snap compared to those around you. Secondly she wants to know whether you cycled the full 63 mile course (the internet is a terrible tool for the very nosey). Lastly how did you get on this year?

Wow! Wow! and Nah! halfofone June 10 2007, 16:51:08 UTC
That is seriously impressive cycling! I look askance at 50 miles. 400K is just gob-smacking. You are definitely let off the hook for doing 'only' 40m!!!

Re the Hastings Half Marathon: You might like to consider Caroline Allen's result at 2:42:23 crossing the line (2:38:34 adjusted by automatic chip timer) This was a lot slower than my previous 'best' of 2:17. Not exactly stellar I know. S did it in about 2:01 two years previous but she keeps getting injuries. I'm going to have a go at another one in October and try and do a little better.

One last Wow! SMG totally owns the flying nun award.

Caro.

Man, you are way too modest. 2:42 is stellar in my book. I can't remember my times in my half-marathons "back in the day," as my students inanely say, but a twelve-minute per mile pace is nothing to sneeze at. 2:01 is nothing short of astonishing, by the way. Atta girl, S!

My city has a half-marathon in October, as well, that I thought for about five seconds of training for. But then I realized I'd have to run 13 miles. Down that way lies burn-out. I have a tendency to get deeply into something then get sick to the death of it. See my above post. :)

Nice time, Caro.
