The other day I started listening to XM's French stations, because I needed to read for class and wanted the radio on but wasn't in the mood for classical, and lyrics I can't understand are less distracting than lyrics I can. And I have subsequently become rather fond of the French stations. Fine.

music--> should be not classical, and not distract.
problem with silence: it's nothing, so although it's not classical, it doesn't count as music.
problem with classical--> it's classical.
problem with english-- it's distracting, and sometimes classical.
problem with french--> it's not classical and not distracting!
there's also the ranking of which is more important, classical or distract. having it not be classical is more important than having it not be distracting.
...or something.
the most pathetic part of this is how excited i am to be able to remember that much about optimality theory. I miss linguistics :D

And yeah, you've pretty much got it. :D I'm taking phonology II with Lunden now, and it was that homework that promoted this. Linguistics misses you! (As do I.)
