The case this time? Using any cables or peripherals not licensed by Sony(makes you wonder about replacing the HDD now, doesn't it...), voids your warranty. Completely. Even AV cables. Even using a lower-price HDMI cable.

Don't forget this isn't something Sony is doing, it is something that has been done. The instant the sony gave PS3s, all of this stuff was in place. It is jsut very fortunate that people are returning them and getting something a little cheaper.
