I didn't hate it. My favorite M. Night Shyamalan film is actually Unbreakable.

I should watch Unbreakable again. Most folks I know rank that one high enough that I wonder if I was too dismissive of it back in the day. I think it would be like #4 for me. (I haven't seen all his films, but I'm assuming I didn't miss anything by skipping The Happening.)

If you do decide to watch it again, I recommend viewing the deleted scenes. There was at least one - I think it occurred in a church? - that I remember thinking, "They should've left that in the final cut."
