I think I agree with docryder's first comment in regards to the artistic embellishment. Also, the idea of a perfect body image has been around forever. Even in the Elizabethan age, you had to have the conical shape. I've read 16th C Italian sources demanding that a pleasing shape of a woman is pale of face, small -but not too small- of breast, golden hair and many many other things. Even in the 18th century, men wore "falsies" which were fake calf muscles to be put into your stocking. Freaking out over those extra pounds or that zit is nothing new.
