West Kingdom Collegium 2011

Yesterday was Collegium in the West Kingdom. First time I've done a West Kingdom event, and it was a very enjoyable Collegium. It was held in Unitarian Church in downtown San Jose, that had a beautiful Sanctuary with lovely stained glass windows. I went with my Barony friend, Pamela. We skipped our own Kingdom's Coronation (an even farther distance ( Read more... )

So glad you could come! sarahbellem was right, we're going to have to come visit you at a Caid event now :)

And yeah, crumhorns are weird, but that's why I love them. They're the heavy metal of renaissance music, IMO.

Crumhorns ARE weird. They definitely take some getting used to, because they're so weird sounding, but also because they take a lot of skill to play and even the most skilled players I know (who were playing last night, btw) still have to fight the instrument to get them to make noise. But they're not to everyone's taste, for sure. ;)

Glad you had fun! We will look at the calendar for next year and see if there's any events in Caid that don't conflict with something here. I know we always talk about going to GWW or visiting some of our friends down in Gyldenholt, but we somehow never manage to do it. It will have to change, though! Keep us updated on some of your barony happenings, because you're definitely closer to us than Gyldenholt... ;)

I've heard period instruments before, and they are odd things to listen to. It just goes to show as well how things have changed since then, and also how some things remain the same as I heard some of the musical parts resolve themselves into a more pleasing to the ear set of sounds.

In Caid, they haven't posted much to the calendar but what is going on is eventually posted to the site here: http://www.sca-caid.org/calendar.php

There is a three day long A&S event in mid-March known as Black Oak Lodge. This year's theme is Persian, but not everything is Persian. I've never been to it, but it is rather popular among some of my friends who go every year. You have to pre-register, and info on this is hereIn April is a two-day Collegium in April that might be of interest to you. They will also be hosting IKINS, an embroidery symposium. Info on both is here, although there isn't any info on the Collegium up yet. ... )

Megryth Bowbreaker did my AoA scroll. I have never met her. Is she active again in the West or somewhere else? I may have seen her at collegium and not known it! I hope I can meet her sometime. I also had a long period of inactivity, and that is when the scroll was done.

Baroness Megryth lives in the West Kingdom, but only has returned to the Society as of the Collegium after many years away. I'm not sure how active she plans on becoming again. And it is possible you may have seen her at Collegium. She is more involved in small renaissance faires at present.
