If the MTA still has an annual fee on FAST LANE, then I recommend getting a New York E-ZPass, which is free if you're willing to do automatic replenishment from a credit or debit card.

AFAICT, trawling the FAST LANE site, there are no annual fees. I know that there used to be, but I can't see any mention of any now. I plan on calling them and seeing whether this is the case or not, as I know that getting around it via the NY system is a common thing and would be more than happy to do so myself if there still is an annual fee.

As of two years ago the NY Ezpass was still cheaper, I think because you didn't have to put down any deposit on the tag when you joined. That's what I went with.

Hmm... looks like you do have to put one down, but it's only $10 and you get it back, whereas you only get back the cost of the FAST LANE transponder within the first six months.

HOWEVER, looking at the NY EZ-Pass website, I'm not sure whether it's still possible to sign up if from MA -- definitely if you say "I'm from MA", it just transfers you to the M(A)T(urnpike)A site. So I dunno. :/
