That's right, this year I begin my fourth decade of life, in which it is official that I have missed the Shivers window for PhD completion. I shan't let that stop me from continuing on though ( Read more... )

Looks like you're ready to graduate research-wise whenever you feel like it. What next?

Well, I've still quite a bit more planned research-wise before I graduate. The contract work I've been doing for first-class modules (done!) and classes (current) is only half the picture, and gets me up to my proposal. The post-proposal era will be using the new contracts plus working on type system extensions to add those same features to Typed Scheme.

Then I'll be ready to graduate.

After that? As always, it depends on what's available then and what opportunities I have. It's far enough down the road that I can't give anything more specific, though I'm definitely working on stuff with a preference for academia rather than industrial research if possible.

Happy birthday! Oh wait... Facebook is for one liners like that...

Frankly, your research sounds pretty awesome, I wouldn't worry too much about the PhD "being late". Besides, breaking rules is more fun...

When does Olin say people should finish their Ph.D. by?

Also, I had an off-by-one (or -ten) and thought for a second that "begin my fourth decade of life" meant you were turning 40 this year. It made me feel really, really young for a minute there.

I almost said my third decade of life, until I realized what age that would make me. So yeah, ordinals vs. cardinals, fun!

Well, he was on a mission to complete his by 30, and I think he made it with scant months to go, IIRC.

For me, finishing by age 30 would mean finishing in under four years. Not gonna happen. I'm shooting for five. If that works out, then, eerily, I will be just about exactly 31.2 when I get out.
