so i went to the ER today, because i had an arrhythmia this morning while working out - my heart was literally skipping every 10 to 12 beats. it freaked me out, but after a bunch of blood work and 2 EKGs, they concluded that it was most likely just dehydration coupled with the strain of working out in the morning. i'm also supposed to avoid ( Read more... )

don't forget the every-other-daily shots of morphine. really, though, they love it - they'll hold their heads still for you to attach the electrodes.

we're working on understanding more about morphine's effects on the mesolimbic dopamine reward system. with other addictive substances, mice will press for lower levels of electricity than they will with saline. yet with morphine, they stop responding altogether. incidentally, this action is probably shared with antipsychotic drugs used to treat schizophrenia, etc., which is how they actually achieve much of their effects. we're trying to understand why the system is shutting down, when it should be activated.

it will almost certainly be published, in one form or another. data's looking pretty good at the moment, although we're finding interesting effects in different strains of mice, which has interesting implications for translation of these results to humans ( ... )
