I don't know if it's new fans or not, but MFU zines that I've posted to eBay several times are now selling. I'm wondering if just because of who's in the new movie, we're already getting renewed interest in the show.
It is ironic, or perhaps just the natural cycle of things, that 50 years after the fact we are on the cusp of yet another round of US/Russian ideological contrasts. Timing is everything in life and movie making, and this may be exactly the right time. Our greatest challenge as first generation 'cousins', obviously, is laying hold of the concept of UNCLE over the actors to whom we are attached. I still don't get Hugh Grant as Waverly though.
Yeah, Grant is a little young for me, too. Actually, I wish they'd made Harris Waverly. He would be a good choice although I would have preferred someone like Anthony Hopkins.
You're right, though, that it's interesting that UNCLE springs up in times of tension between the US and Russia. Interesting coincidence.
And if they make a sequel, don't you think Alan Rickman would make a good Victor Marton?
I like the idea of an origins of U.N.C.L.E. movie. Will be interesting to see how it's all brought together, but as you mentioned certainly now there won't be that untenable scenario of Illya being mistakenly classed as a defector. He'll be Soviet through and through and that's great. It will really bring into sharp focus the uniqueness of the idea of an American and a Russian actually working together for a common goal during the height of the Cold War.
Definitely this does look like a new franchise venture for WB.
I am quite looking forward to this movie, now that the casting holds promise and they are no longer casting actors too "long in the tooth" for Solo. And Cavill has such charm (that was clearly in evidence in THE TUDORS), I'm really looking forward to seeing his portrayal of Napoleon.
i'm interested to see the tone of the thing we end up with, the idea that [theoretically] MFU could be a franchise that takes $100 million is decidedly odd isnt it.
Actually not. We first cousins experienced UNCLE fever in the 1960s ---it was incredibly, wildly success when I was 12. It will be nice to see that again, maybe.
