Yeah, I notice he remembers me better when we're not in a crowd of fans. :) He kind of shuts down in large groups.
My fav memory is a phone conversation trying to arrange an interview as we compared and tried to juggle parental responsibilities: "I have to pick up my son at school." "Well, my daughter has soccer.."
Hey he's still doing great for his age right? That's a great memory comparing parental responsibilities, and humanized a superstar really. All too often I think fans put their idols on a pedestal to the point where they lose sight that said idols have lives and families beyond their work.
I first saw RV in a failed series called "The Lieutenant." It starred Gary Lockwood, and RV was his commanding officer. I think it ran a half a season in about 1963. But RV was the reason I watched. And so I was thrilled when I saw he was starring in MfU. Of course, the moment the opening began I was captivated by DMcC, but I did love Robert Vaughn, and he is the reason I'm still an ardent UNCLE fan.
Oh I remember the Lieutenant well. Of course, I saw it *after* UNCLE in reruns years later.
Norman produced it and as the story goes, that's what got RV the Solo role. RV says that although his role was serious, when the cameras stopped he would make a witty remark. Norman liked this and when he couldn't get his first choice ---Cary Grant ---for the role, he thought of RV.
Yeah, Roddenberry was involved too. That's the link between Roddenberry, Norman and Sam Rolfe. I think Gene was producer/creator/writer and Norman was exec producer.
What folks might not know is that was also the origin of G.I. Joe. The toy guy [whose name escapes me at the moment ] came to Norman with an idea for a soldier doll like Barbie. They'd done Dr. Kildare doctor kits previously. Later they would do the MFU toys.
Not many people can say they've met someone famous whom they respected/liked. Fewer still can say that famous person was everything they'd hoped them to be. :)

RV IS sort of a Cary Grant, but his voice is much smoother. I call it "seducto-voice."
