Hi, my name is Jade and I've been accepted into St. Mary's. I'm currently trying to decide between St. Mary's and New College of Florida and its a tough call, both have their pros/cons and similarities with each other. I'm deeply attached to art but I'm also interested in a lot of other things like Literature and Philosophy. St. Mary's seems to ( Read more... )

Well...I wasn't an art major, but I'm pretty sure both of my art classes counted towards my GPA. Usually detrimentally, but whatever. :)

I've heard nothing but great things about the art department. I know quite a few art majors and they're all very passionate about what they do and have had great experiences.

art courses being exempt from your GPA calculation..? i would venture to say that that's a dirty lie.

i'm a political science & philosophy double major and if there's one thing i love about st. mary's, it's the philosophy department. the faculty is filled the brim with intelligence and passion - the classes i've enjoyed the most here at st. mary's are east asian philosophy & religion and a philosophical topics course called "sense of responsibility." some people feel that there isn't enough of a focus on formal logic, but personally, i'm not a fan of it anyway, so i don't mind.

if you really can't decide based on merits alone, you should schedule overnight visits to both schools. make sure to sit in on classes, if possible. it might be difficult at this point in the year, but it doesn't hurt to try.

hi jade. well, i was in your exact same spot 4 years ago. I chose st mary's. and last year, i spent my "semester abroad" at new college. so i've got you covered. let me start with what i know best: art. st mary's: the art department is great for the school's size nad has more than 2 instructors. i know at new college (although i didn't take a studio class), if you don't like one of the 2 profs, you're relatively screwed. at st mary's at least you have a little flexibility. although at new college, you CAN do independent studies (by can i mean have to) where you kind of just do your thing without a structured art class or the instruction that goes with it. new college offers one of the best art historians i know, but st mary's has the other. as for philosophy, it's one of the biggest majors at new college and all of the interesting classes are really really hard to get in to. at st marys, like some of the other comments, i agree that the philosophy department is one of the best at the school. the real deal maker/breaker is ( ... )

hey thanks! that was really helpful, and yea I researched more into the art professors at New College and even talked to a student who goes there and they didn't seem all that great. So I'm 90% sure I'm going to go to St. Mary's.

Yeah, i can count on my 2 hands the art students at new college, whereas i can count on my 2 hands the pretty fantastic art faculty at st mary's. (this is, of course, not saying that art at st mary's is the best, or even great compared to larger schools, because we all know that art is the most expensive department. although we ARE getting a brand new darkroom for next year. hopefully you can enjoy)
