Thanks to everyone who replied to my last post, it was really helpful. Now I'm 90% sure that I'm going to go to St. Mary's unless I hear back from a school that waitlisted me. It's kind of weird how St. Mary's started as a safety school for me, but now I like it quite a bit. But I still feel kind of awkward since it seems like NO ONE outside of ( Read more... )

First and foremost: It really doesn't matter a lick where your friends are going. What you're looking for is the best experience/education combo possible ( ... )

Why: everything. I'll leave it to others to say what they loved unless you want a followup.
Well, like everywhere, there are pitfalls, but you can make the best of them.

If you ever feel put-down or anything by people with much more well-recognized or esteemed degrees and alma maters, you can remind them (and yourself!) that the SMCM students and alums are doing quite fine for themselves. We have jobs, are in grad schools or med schools or law schools or are volunteering everywhere or just doing all kinds of wonderful things. I think you'll find with time you find people who recognize St. Mary's in all sorts of random places -- like professional wrester Razor Ramon!

St. Mary's is awesome because the faculty are dedicated to teaching YOU, first and foremost. I am sure that all your friends will get a lot out of their ivies, I must say I'm a bit biased against "name" schools. I'm doing grad school at UC Berkeley, and it's a fantastic environment for grad students and for research, but I really believe that the undergrads suffer significantly because ultimately no one here cares what they get out of their classes. At St. Mary's, you will be working intimately with professors who put your education first.

Because professors know you by name, are willing to help you, and care about you as a person, whether it's an intro. class outside your major or your SMP.

Because you can get credit for learning how to sail, and can go sailing after class just because you feel like it.

Because no matter how stressed out you are, going for a walk along the water always helps you feel better.

Because within weeks, you will feel at home and won't be able to go 3 minutes without seeing someone you know. If that.

Because it's much less expensive than most other schools for the quality of education you receive.

Because you can walk around campus at 1 am and not feel unsafe. I'm going back to school in the fall at the University of New Orleans, and I'll bet you can't do that there.

Because in the end it doesn't matter so much if you went to a brand-name school, it matters that you grew as a person and received a good education.
