I'd recommend a hammer and both kinds of screwdrivers for a tool kit. I used mine at least once a semester, usually for trying to get my bed to the perfect height. Though i eventually learned that kicking the bed is quicker. Oh well, i'm sure it will still come in handy

Ear plugs helped for sleeping. Also ice packs for the fridge, or I guess even just cans of soda in case the AC breaks and you're desperate for some cold.
a fan. instead of top sheets, which get tangled and are annoying, go for a duvet cover. it serves as a top sheet, it keeps the duvet clean... it's good.
rug for the floor- bare tile is the most depressing thing ever.
ummmm...
I would say- keep track of what you use in a week at home. bring all that, as well as duck tape, scizzors, a sewing kit (cause you never know)school work stuff, and hammer nails type things. everything else you can buy at walmart or target if you need it. plus, it's hard to know what you're going to have room for until you see the room.
WC is nice, but be prepared to be visiting everyone else- not a lot of freshmen who live in the dorms are going to want to walk out to you when it's raining/sleeting/snowing/cold/hot/tepid/cloudy/sunny/breezy/humid/chilly/nice/raining aliens.
so uh yeah. make sure at least one of your pairs of shoes can handle mud and rain and puddles. you'll need them. also- poncho or raincoat.
