St. Mary's in the News

I know this community has a good number of alums on it -- and I suspect that you might not keep up on what's happening down on the river. (Like did you see that they redesigned the website? In particular, admissions seems much more appealing.) So here's just two recent articles on the ol' SMCM from the Washington Post:

Roiling on the River St. ( Read more... )

What was the sense on campus during the lockdown? Fear? A sense that the administration was overreacting in the wake of VT? What the hell does "lockdown" entail? Does it mean no one can go outside?

Sorry.....it's just very difficult to identify with. Any description from the student side would be very useful.

/and yes, there are a lot of alums in this comm just keeping tabs on the school. Thank you very much for this post.

There was a helicopter circling the campus and they sent out a few e-mails. My roommate was in a meeting with her prof so she got info before anyone else and would call and fill me in. (Apparently they notify faculty of what's going on before they tell students). She said that by the time they sent students an e-mail saying they apprehended someone who might be the culprit, the faculty had already been informed that they let the guy go because they knew it wasn't him ( ... )

it was pretty lowkey. i was stopping by the health center to get some sudafed with another friend. it was between classes, i was going from schaefger to monty and just popped in. anyway, i am ushered in and made to sit.. they printed out the emails for us as they came, gave us all their snack food and drinks and whatnot. i guess being trapped with counselors during a lockdown makes them pretty cuddly affairs ( ... )

Some prof asked me the other day what I thought of the boathouse. I said it was probably needed, but it blocked the view. He jumped down my throat saying that students should not be coming here for a view and other stuff. It was ridiculous. The thing's an eyesore. They could have easily moved it over closer to Kent so its not blocking everything.

everybody comes to St.Mary's for the view, it's the one of the top things it has going for it.

also, Maggie O'Brien approved the cutting down of Magnolia trees to try to "enhance" the view after people started complaining. I don't see how they could have allowed this happen or that anybody has the authority to cut down trees for the view's sake (which did not help at all, magnolias are beautiful!)
