Goodbye Tumblr

Feb 05, 2014 17:40

Made a Tumblr account about a week ago.

Using Tumblr was like eating a cake and slowly realizing it had been made with spoiled eggs.

Just deleted the account. I know nobody's using LJ any more but this is home.

Tumblr is for pet pictures, really.

Yeah. It's bad in both obvious and subtle ways. Punishes communication and rewards posing and grandstanding. Goes a long way to explain the culture it's spawned.

I really like it for all the part of it that you couldn't really call a culture

I don't see the "punishes communication" thing. I honestly, genuinely don't get it. I've heard a couple of people say this, but I've never understood what they mean.

I mean, yes, it lacks this kind of reply chain. But it still has reply chains (via reblog-with-add, which is basically how people have been using email for the last 15 years, for better or worse) and while it's certainly bandwidth-inefficient, once you get used to it, it's just another method.

Of course, I'm certainly biased, having had more fun on Tumblr than all the other "social media" sites combined over the last few years. Tumblr is where I get my crazy fan batshittery on, and I like that. We are in a goddam golden age of crazy fanac, and I love it.

But also, I've met more people IRL via there than I did even via, say, Livejournal in its heyday, particularly thanks to things like Jaegercon, the online entirely-fun-run convention for Pacific Rim, which spawned meetups and showings in dozens of cities worldwide. And VirtualCon, which did the same sorts of things. ( ... )
