As someone whose been trying to archive the unfilled prompts (and it takes a long time, let me tell you!) the 'second' comments are sometimes troublesome because I'm not sure if they're actually filling the prompt or not.
However, this could all be avoided if people used subject lines whenever they filled a prompt. Most people do, but there are still a lot who don't, and it would make my job a whole lot easier.
i usually scroll the comments of a prompt to see if it's filled. i look for part 1/2 and things like that which give it away. having people use subject lines would not only make it easier for the achievers but the readers as well

there was a comment thread about this a while ago, in which people gave pros/cons about subject lines. if you read lj through email, they start new emails, which is a good/bad thing. i can't remember what else people said, but there were people who were anti-comment headers.
i'm curious what counts as a "useless comment" and what doesn't. personally, i find i even liked the secondeds: as a writer, i know what prompts a lot of people are looking at, and a reader, i like seeing what kind of people look at what.
i'm also interested in finished/wip fic comments. if someone is working on someone and you make a comment like "good job!" or "need more!" or "i'll be in my bunk," does this count as a useless comment? because as a writer, those keep me going, srs. and as a reader, seeing lots of comments on a thread makes me interested in it. i don't like seeing (deleted comment), because in my world, deleting a comment implies offense, and it seems like deleting comments that are SUPPORTING others is contradictory. that's my personal thing, though.
I agree with you. I notice a prompt more if more people like it; more of a feeling that I'm doing something someone will appreciate, etc etc etc.
and some of the most fun i've had is scrolling through and just hearing other people's exclamations of joy - people on this meme have a great tendency to be effing hilarious.
i would not like to see comments segregated into useless and useful. i know it would make things easier for the archivers, but it makes me sad inside. ):
I'm not sure if this is possible or not, but I think it would be cool if the current part could somehow be at the top of the comm. It's the most visited post to the comm, so people who are new might be a bit lost at first if it's not the first thing they see. Also, once people have voted in the poll/read updates/etc. they just have to scroll past it. I think activity might be boosted if it were at the top?
ANOTHER SUGGESTION! :)theinamorataJune 8 2009, 05:35:24 UTC
Because I'm an organizational freak when it comes to online things (if only I could look at my room the same way, haha), I was thinking of a more efficient way for the unfilled prompts to be archived. And I was thinking, what if we put them all on the Delicious account? Except the filled ones were tagged 'FILLED' and the unfilled ones were tagged 'UNFILLED'. That way, when they're filled we just have to quickly switch the tag. Also, we wouldn't have to wank with so much code and have to deal with multiple archiving places.
I was messing around on my own Delicious account, and there is a method to add/remove tags in bulk, so making the switch would be easy, if we were to do it.
So new prompts would be added as 'unfilled,' and once they're filled, whoever's archiving just goes and changes its tag from 'unfilled' to 'filled.'
If there really is a limit, then we could just have another delicious account altogether for unfilled prompts? It wouldn't affect the filled ones at all but it would still make the unfilled prompts easier to organize.
I can see that when it's just "seconded!" But sometimes people start bantering around ideas and making jokes, and those threads can be as much fun as the fic itself for me. I for one would quite miss reading them.
