Jim sees the boy standing by himself, ramrod straight against the brick wall not-watching the other boys play basketball, and he doesn't think twice. He marches over, tugs on the boy's arm, not looking back once.

Under the shade of a large oak tree, Jim meets eyes with the boy for the first time, and never has he seen eyes so dark, so wide, so still, so strange.
