Apologies and a new request

Sep 12, 2009 22:12

I have been slightly scarce recently, for which I'd like to apologise profusely.

School's started up recently and to put it very mildly, it's been a bit hectic. As a result, I again have to say sorry to you all: for a week or so I will remain scarce ( Read more... )

It'd be even easier if people, yanno, stop being offensive.

Agreed. I don't know if it's the wording (I am going to chalk it to that) but the mod seems to keep stressing for people not to react, but does little to warn those who incite. What about those who post intentionally wanky prompts ("Put the bitch in her place!" or thinly veiled "Well, it's my kink to think Uhura is uppity, duh." wankbait) un-anoned? Can't they also be banned if they're intentionally trying to stir up wank?

The wording sucks. I think perhaps certain people should make it clear there's no place for racism/sexism in fandom. That would make everything a whole lot easier.

But is that by necessity true in a kink meme? Or should I say, a space that's been declared an anything goes area. If rape/bestiality/incest/underage (ie things that IRL are not just wrong but illegal) are all okay, then why aren't racism and sexism? I think it's a tenuous argument to make that they're substantially different. It's a "flaw" in the entire concept of the kink meme, and not just here, I've seen versions of it in five fandoms now. Once anything goes, anything goes.

I'd like to be clear that I'm not endorsing or approving of the sentiments in question, but in a meme I scroll right past them the same way I scroll past "Please have Kirk raped to death by werewolves". If I saw them on a comm, otoh, I might well comment.

For myself, I would like to ban the "I'm so sick of x, let's have y" which is often a particularly lame attack on others, imho. I wish there was less introductory dialogue in prompts, and more: Person X + Person Y + Kink Z instead. *That* would mean less wank.

I know it can be really hard to walk away at something upsetting or offensive; but it just makes life so much easier for everyone if you can do so.

By saying this, you obviously don't understand what's going on here. Because the people who are being marginalized here have to WALK AWAY and PRETEND NOTHING IS WRONG ALL THE TIME in real life.

To come home after a long day of "get back in the kitchen" and "uppity black woman" stereotypes in real life--only to see it in fandom? The one safe place where there should be Acceptance and Discussion? It breaks hearts.

tl;dr YOUR PRIVILEGE IS SHOWING.

You seem to completely have missed the point of it being a KINK meme. There are many ppl who want to read fics that aren't politically correct or even offensive.

Why have this comm in the first place if we should discuss what's OK in society?

Do you think it's more appropriate to write about rape or incest than a woman in the kitchen?

As an anon pointed out above - this isn't about the rape or the incest. This is about punishing a woman for being a woman or having the audacity to speak out. This is about punishing a black woman. If that is your kink, then that is your kink. Kink and intent are different.

http://community.livejournal.com/st_xi_kink/9000.html?thread=27747368#t27747368 - there's a great discussion on what I mean. Anon and wook77 do a good job on fleshing out the difference.

How hard is it to grasp that saying "I want to see Nero/Uhura because that bitch got uppity and deserves to be taken down a peg" is different from "I want to see Nero/Uhura, Nero is a racist motherfucker".

The first one is racist.

The second one is racism as a kink. It's discussing something that isn't ok in society but doesn't have a racist tone.

Spoiler alert, Uhura isn't real.

You can't punish someone who isn't real.

As an outsider looking in on this fandom, it's incredibly enlightening to know that racism and sexism are totally a-okay, but commenting on the fact that they are harmful and dangerous is not. Or, and I would say this is the more likely scenario, the mod of the ~*anon "kink" meme~* is a fucking dumbass twatwaffle with an overly healthy dose of privilege and a lack of common sense and/or decency.

It's my understanding that she's always wanted offensive requests to be reported by PM for consideration of freezing/deletion, rather than spammed with more intentionally inflammatory comments.

That still leaves the final decision in her hands, but I really don't think she's condoning the posting of hurtful, discriminatory material or any such thing here.

She actively encouraged the reposting of a racist and misogynistic prompt. How is that "not condoning" it?

If she isn't condoing it, why not put the same burden of risk (getting banned) on those who post "hurtful, discriminatory material" as the ones who point it out? It's a simple addition to the rules. The absence of an equivalent punishment is damning.
