Docile Entrepreneurship

If you are Australian, and you are tempted to skip over this post because it fails to rouse your interest, I beg you not to. I am not moved to battle social issues lightly, yet this has stirred such profound feelings of anger in me I can't begin to process them. I am vegetarian, and I have to say that these practices aren't new. It's been going on for so long and it will probably never change. There are many more humane ways to slaughter an animal, but they probably cost a little more, which means 99% of places won't even consider it.

Temple Grandin designed a method for animal slaughter, that basically doesn't let the animal know what's happening to it, therefor reducing the stress.

I am sorry, I don't mean to anger anyone in the know by suggesting that this is a new development - I know it is not. I suspect this is probably a very common problem in most countries - I cannot control what third world countries do, nor can I have the arrogance to judge a developing nation on the practices they use.

However, what is new to me is our involvement. I am outraged that Australia has taken such a cognizant part in it. Reports and reviews have even been funded and circulated by the industry, citing the treatment and slaughter of these animals as "fairly good, and reasonably humane." A doctor of something-or-another was filmed announcing this precise conclusion regarding one of the abattoirs that had been filmed.

My father murmured across the loungeroom, "how much did you get paid."

I'm sorry if you feel I'm flapping my arms in a "get on the bandwagon" fashion... I probably am. I just... I didn't know about it before.
