Hey! I'm not here for bad vibes, I asked you this Q on budgerigars, decided to take it to your LJ so we can talk about it properly. (Cause in bird communities you get too many opinions, best not to offer it to the public!). I was replying to your comment where you said your hen had recently had a clutch of eggs. I was wondering what kind of breeding set up you have?

I didn't intentionally breed my budgies. They had a happy hut in their cage, which they never, ever used or went inside of. They preened the fuzz & used it as a swing. Then, one day, I saw them both (I have 2 budgies.. a male & a female) in the happy hut. A week later, my hen layed an egg. That was the most stressful week of both of our lives. I found the egg on the grate of the cage & it was cracked, so I removed it. A day later, there was another egg on the grate of the cage, and also cracked. At this point, I removed the happy hut. Thenn, a day or so later, she layed a third & smaller egg. Which was also on the grate... and cracked. It's been at least a week since the third egg was layed & she hasn't layed anymore. I am absolutely not a breeder nor do I claim to be one. This was an accident & it stressed me and Emmy (hen) out like no other. Had the eggs not been cracked, I would have frozen them and given them back to Emmy for her to do what she wanted to do with them until she realised that they would not hatch. Uh so yeah!

I'm just glad for you (and Emmy) that she didn;t develop a taste for her eggs... since breeding and laying takes so much out of a hen it is common that they will eat their eggs. Emmy had the perfect opportunity but she didn't eat them

Read if you want to know my view on breeding.
I'm just curious about your breeding practices and (you may have guessed) not condemning nor judgemental. Just curious!
(PS I'm not a gossip and would never spread anything about you o'er the net. Reply on my LJ if you want, it's friends locked!)

There are a lot of rescues in my relative area & I won't ever breed any of my birds. Or any of my pets, for that matter.
