Whenever I hear or see 1914, I think of these words written in Pat Barker's "Regeneration":
"Do you know what happened on August 4th 1914? I'll tell you what happened. PEACE broke out!"
These words are spoken by a munitions worker whose husband used to beat her before the war. I think this is relavant, because it was the patriatchal history which allowed her husband the right to beat her, and, as Owen points out, it was also this patriarchichal tradition, from Greece to Rome etc (even Aristotle was a sexist) which glorified, honoured, and started WWI.
The mixing of the natural and unnatural images was very effective (as you pointed out). Also, the use of seasons is a bit alarming because that implies a cycle (like you said already also!). So overall, I don't think I have anything to add. With war comes the end to all things progressive and humane.
