Anyone I know good at getting ubuntu and the wpa here at my house to play nice, or anyone have a 60' ethernet cord they want to send on permanent loan?  *sigh*  Sick of internet in this corner, it was supposed to be temporary!

What's the specific problem with ubuntu? I had a heck of a time getting wireless working, but it turned out to be due to an additional sort-of-hardware switch accessible only via windows. (Good thing I didn't delete that partition.)

I don't have a loaner cable that long, but I will look next time I'm in the office (although that's not until next week.) Maybe try FreeGeek? If they have 60' of cable, I have all the stuff to finish it.

Specific problem in Ubuntu 9.10 is that when trying to connect to a wireless network through the nm-applet the choices available for type of network to connect to are WEP, WEP, and LEAP. There's no mention of WPA. If you try and edit the Automatic connection (It creates a WEP by default) and switch it to a WPA Automatic connection, the applet ignores the old one, and creates a new one as WEP eacdh time you try to edit the new one, ad infinitum.

Checked the driver I'm using, should be able to use WPA, and the packages are installed.

Bah.

I could probably switch off the applet and do it manually, but it makes me grumpy that it doesn't work in this release. I suppose I could also head back to an earlier release. Again, grump. :-)

Freegeek is a good idea. Since my laptop battery is shot anyway, I may just head back to a desktop for a while. It'd be faster as well!

We've got wire you can borrow (have? unsure).

Have you tried unlocking the internet to see whether you can get it working at all?

I hadn't tried because Sam liked the setup the way it is.

Wire would be awesome, and actually, I think I'm going to get a freek box from freegeek for a desktop, since this laptop is essentially a desktop now anyway. Wire sounds like the easiest route. Perhaps I should just see what a bunch of really long tested ethernet would run me there.

Thanks, yo!
