weekend project

It's hard to really consider it a "weekend" when it's only one day off, but then that single day usually turns into a frenzy of errands, laundry, cleaning, and cooking to prepare for the next 6-day stretch. In the vein of "spring" cleaning (to contrast with the temperatures in the 20s the last few days), we tackled a little home organization today.

The original plan was to look for shoe shelves. The Hubby actually came home with some yesterday, but they were the expandable rail type that I have found frustrating in the past. We didn't end up buying any today, but it's down to these possibilities:

"Cubby" style

or multiples of something like this:

You may be asking why he thinks we need shoe organization shelving....

We keep shoes in three major piles.
The coat closet:

The storage closet next to it:

And the bedroom which catches new shoes and overflow (these were in the bedroom closet until it flooded):

Oh, and you can't even see the three that arrived in the mail the other day:

Yup. I counted them quickly this morning and (not counting boots because they won't fit on a shoe shelf) need to store about 40 pairs of shoes. Really, I could edit a few. Maybe five? But it would be a lie to say I won't buy new sandals this summer.

So we failed to actually purchase shoe storage, but we did get other things accomplished. We got some new gardening accoutrement which I hope to address in another post or two.

We did tackle another organizing challenge: the linen closet! One of our apartment's major features is the copious amount of closet space. It has, in a basement-like manner, allowed us to acquire a great deal of stuff. The stuff would get shoved onto shelves or crammed somewhere out of the way until suddenly the closet was a disaster zone. Enter a utility shelving unit and a few storage bins!

There used to be a file cabinet in there, but we moved that out next to the desk (which worked better than we planned!). There is still a bit more arranging to do, like we want small storage bins that we can easily get in and out of the closet onto the shelves, but it was a good afternoon project. Here is the closet with labels, and if you click this one, it will take you to the larger size if you're nosy!

Getting the closet organized (and some of the other bookshelves were also helped by this) somewhat mollified the Hubby after the day started with the cat knocking a framed piece of art down, smashing the glass into a million pieces. At least the art was fine, but we'll have to get a new piece of glass.

Guess which cat did it?

Nonchalent Ninja....

... or Aloof Artemis?
