Give me a fuckin' break. Just because the art in a manga isn't OMG GORGEOUS, doesn't mean the story automatically sucks. I've seen manga filled with many bishies (well, the typical fan's definition of that term anyhow) and beautiful backgrounds, but the story itself is pure garbage

Well, it's actually quite a few of them. But One Piece is one of them. -_-;

The One Piece art isn't going to work for everyone, but the story is worth it.

Yeah, it's a great story. And...I dunno, the art is so unique, though. The character designs also distinguish each of them so well. It's not like the some of the generic shoujo ones I see (like in Kare First Love or Happy Hustle High, I swear they are both practically the same comic).

Even with that point, I'd hardly call the art in One Piece bad.

When you compare the amount of detail Oda puts in to stuff like backgrounds and expressions to a lot of other Shounen manga (hello Bleach), it's really pretty amazing.

One Piece tends to have a lot more detail in things like background and facial expressions then a lot of others in it's field IMO.

I agree. Oda puts so much effort into his manga, in both its art and its story. I'm glad OP is as popular as it is (in Japan, anyway), it deserves its success.

I think most people judge a book by it's cover, because they like to look at pretty art.

Like me, I really like cute art and I tend to ignore series that the art doesn't really make me think it's cute. Which is one of the reason I rarely read any Shoujo, because I don't really think some shoujo art is "cute" even though it's supposed to be. ( Strangely enough, I tend to think Shounen art is cuter then Shoujo art.o_o )

I know. Looking back at some of the really good mangas (especially the beginning), the art's not all that spiffy.
