not remotely linked but i have now listened to "my chain" (i guess there's a tangential link as "at the hop" was loosely written about jonathan king, hence "johnny reggae" being mentioned) and can confirm that it's... odd. rather lovely but very, very odd. like no other bmx bandits record i've heard and all the better for that - it's heavily textured, bizarrely with a lot of keyboards (you can only tell the arrangements are davy scott on a couple of tracks, most particularly a rather beautiful new version of "the sailor's song") and a bit dreamy in places. it's going to take a few listens to get used to but it's as brave a departure as "theme park" was after "gettin' dirty" (rough and ready after pop classicism i guess is what i'm getting at). i'd definitely investigate - even cheaper if you get it directly from revola...
I've got the impression that some fairly major changes have gone on in the world of the BMX Bandits in recent times . . well, they're pretty much different every time they re-emerge aren't they?
Does the new girl singer play a major part in this album?
Am intrigued and intend to pick it up shortly.
Have you got the new Lambchop yet? It's probably my most played new album at the moment, but it still hasn't quite got me like previous albums yet - as a whole that is, certain key tracks are already firm favourites.
i think that's one of the things i like about the bandits - that they're always a bit different but because of duglas intrinsically the same band. i mean much as i love francis' songwriting i've actually struggled more with nice man and cheeky monkey than "my chain" because somehow lots of francis and no duglas isn't quite my cup of tea (although i think there's perhaps too much duglas - the new new album they're recording now has at least one song sung entirely by the new woman which bodes well)
not a very big singing role from the woman. i mean not as big as kle on "theme park" for example. but i think it's a role that's getting bigger
not got the lambchop yet - no money so unless i see it cheap it's going to have to wait for the sales or possibly seeing it cheap when in america... but i am intrigued though. are we talking "nixon" or "what another man spills" or something completely different? you know how i get about them when they're too lush...
Vocally it reminds me a lot of older albums - particularly How I Quit Smoking - but writing-wise I'd say it combines elements of Is a Woman and Aw C'Mon/No You C'mon. It is fairly "lush" in places, but they're using a more chamber strings sound, as opposed to the big sweeping strings . . which is something that goes down well with me.
I reckon you'll like it, but be prepared for a slow-burning experience I'd say.
