so, continuing in my procrastination, i decided to install looking glass. (https://lg3d.dev.java.net/). it seems a lot more rudimentary than i originally thought.. you can do just about nothing. if you run it in a window, it runs at a decent speed, but you can't really start any apps. if you ( Read more... )

yeah i remember hearing a fair amount of hype about it on i think /. back in the day - and then not being very impressed with it. i think that it probably needs to run as a native program, instead of java. it'd probably become usably fast at any rate...

even if it ran as a native, i doubt the speed would increase that much. it seems like they're working on adding functionality right now.. optimizations will come later (hopefully).

The wonders of Open source...

cool that's availiable...but considering the tremendous power of PCs, they must have written some bad code...O( n^8)

yeah. the minimum system requirements are 2Ghz and 512 megs of ram.. that's pretty brutal. i have geforce4 video card on top of that, and it's still slow.
