is there a better substitute for cow's milk? formula? goat's milk? almond milk?

Yes, yes and yes! Any of those three things would be better than cow's milk at this age.

i gave chase a small amount of goat milk in addition to his ebm for a few months to supplement my supply and he tolerated it really well.

I would say organic goat as a first, organic soy as a second, and almond milk as a third - because almond milk does not have a lot of fat in it (IIRC). The head of the breastfeeding clinic here in Toronto says that six-month-old breastfed babies can be given soy, cow, or goat milk as opposed to formula for the occasional bottle (I have no idea how to spell "occasional"). If you want I can find the reference on his website. Just FWIW. I haven't given Frances anything but breastmilk but (like you) I really do not like pumping and if I want to be away from her, I want to make sure she gets what she needs.

Both my kids inexplicably stopped breastfeeding at 7 months and we used goat milk for both until a year or so with good results. I can't place the source now, but we had heard that the fat globules in goat milk are the same size as human fat globules or something along those lines.
