my kids didn't lights out, nighty until they were 2 and 4. sorry.
and they still don't go immediately to sleep. some nights they do because I have worn them out properly, but most nights they are up there gossipping and chitter chattering for an hour. the rule is: you stay in the bed. period.
they sleep in the same bed. there are two full-size beds in the room and I split them up if they get too animated. that's been since about 9m (11m?) for the younger. we always laid down with them until they fell asleep, which didn't take too long and then when we moved and I was here by myself for a whole summer, I was like, 1. stories. 2. you nurse, but not too sleep. 3. good night, I will be right downstairs. there was crying and a lot of me proving that I would come right back for about 5 or 6 days and then, sleepies!
yeah, i got nothing for you. sorry. it's going to be ugly here, soon, too, since it looks like our 'hey, let's get the kids' room ready by the time you start your new job!' thing is way behind schedule. i'm so fucked next month. tra la la la la~!!
I found bedtime went much smoother once I figured out when they would actually fall asleep. E.G. If I put them to bed at 8 and they didn't fall asleep til 9, then we had an hour of stress that was no fun for them or for me.
Once I started putting them to bed closer to the time they went to sleep, it sort of fell more into place.
Its still stressful to get it worked out & going smoothly. Wishing you lots of luck & paitence!
i have it in my head that i should be able to turn off the light and have the kids immediately go to sleep. i mean really, i don't want to commit more than 30 minutes to the entire exercise and i want to be done by 9pm.
that isn't unreasonable is it?
It's not an unreasonable desire to have but I don't think it's realistic at all. I mean, unless you do some sort of CIO method early on in life I don't think that bedtime is like that until you can actually get the kids to comprehend something like, "once it's bedtime you stay in bed, even if you don't sleep." Granted, my kids have never been what could be described as "good sleepers" so maybe I'm just bitter and spewing my bitterness out onto the world here :)
