Granted this is an old post, but it's my first time here, so bear with me...
While I agree with your grandmother, I think it has a lot to do with the perception of time we all have as we grow and develop. I mean, babies sleep all the time, so their concept of time is very limited... children have a bit more complex understanding, but I don't think it's until most people enter the school system that their concept of time really begins to become defined. From this point on, it all depends upon what path in life the person chooses- almost certainly, if they end up raising children their concept of time changes drastically :P Lastly, in their later years, when people spend most of their day sleeping and trying to repair the damage their weakened bodies continue to absorb (but not heal so quickly from), their concept of time changes even more drastically... and that's assuming their mind stays intact enough to still function well.
