1. Name: Meghan
2. Age: 26
3. If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you choose?
London. I'm a such an anglophile, but sadly I've never even been to the UK. (Once I have enough saved for a big vacation, that's where I'm going, though.) London just strikes me as an exciting, diverse, unique city filled with culture, history, and all that beautiful architecture. I’m sure I’m completely romanticizing it and have it built up unrealistically in my mind, but oh well. I also wouldn't mind being fairly close to Ireland (it would be nice to visit the places my grandparents were from), as well as the rest of Europe. Plus, I’m a sucker for British accents.
4. What would your Room of Requirement look like?
I think it would be a small, cozy place (with plush rugs, cushy sofas and chairs, and pretty lamps) to escape from the annoyances of the real world. It would be stocked with music, books, DVDs, and I think I'd start to go into withdrawal if I didn't have access to the internet. There would also be supplies for crafty projects like knitting and beading, since I often get the urge to make something and like to keep my hands occupied. And I wouldn’t have to deal with any messes I might make.
5. Who is your least favorite Harry Potter character?
Umbridge. There were times I actually had to put Order of the Phoenix down for a moment and take a deep breath, she made me so angry. The sadistic punishment, the racism, the fact that she sent dementors -- you know, those creatures that can suck out your freaking soul -- after Harry just because he dared to say Voldemort was back and then later tried Crucio him...ugh, what a vile human being. Perhaps the worst part about her was that she actually had a legitimate position of power in the Ministry. Her centaur trauma wasn't nearly enough punishment in my opinion.
6. Is the glass half empty or half full?
Well, it just feels natural to say half full. I think I'm an optimist -- I try to see the bright side and I believe that most things tend to work out in the end.
7. Give us a quotation (Can be from a famous person, a song, or even a poem-whatever you want) you feel represents your life or personality.
I am terrible at remembering quotes (I think the only ones I could easily reference would be Jack Handey’s Deep Thoughts, and those…aren’t appropriate for this situation), but here's one that kind-sorta fits me:
"Personally I'm always ready to learn, although I do not always like being taught." -- Sir Winston Churchill
Oh, and: "There is always chocolate." My mom put that on my refrigerator with magnetic poetry pieces. I think it's a good mantra.
8. In your life, who comes first: family or friends?
Family, probably -- they've always been there for me and they always will be. As much as I love my friends, whenever we're living far away from each other our friendship suffers, but I've always remained close to my family. I do have a couple very dear friends who I might as well be related to, though, and I'd definitely put them first right along with my family (also, they're less likely to nag me, like my parents sometimes do).
9. What is your favorite childhood memory?
I can't really think of anything specific, but I loved the times I'd spend with my brother and our three very good friends just playing silly make-believe games. If we stayed in the house, we'd build forts (it really is amazing what can be done with furniture and bed sheets), and if we were outside we'd play in the small forest right next to our house and pretend to be soldiers or something, or if it was winter we'd climb all over the ginormous pile of snow the snowplow created at the end of our street (I lived in Alaska -- it was a huge pile of snow).
10. What would you say is your biggest flaw?
That would be procrastination. There was rarely a paper I wrote in college that I wasn't frantically (and sometimes half-assedly) working on the night before it was due, and in general I constantly put off things I don't want to deal with. I also have a tendency to blow problems out of proportion, making me even less willing to confront them.
11. If you had been at Hogwarts during Harry's fifth year, do you think that you would have joined the D.A.?
Definitely. It's not as if I regularly broke rules, but if I believe a rule is wrong, I won't have a problem breaking it. And joining the DA would have seemed like the right thing to do, since I would have felt like Umbridge was both interfering with my education and endangering my safety. Knowing I was doing something to oppose that hateful hag would have been a nice benefit, too.
12. Describe how you react to difficult or stressful situations.
I don't usually freak out, and I get through those situations basically by focusing on them completely, but I'm not pleasant to be around in stressful times. I get pretty quiet (though there may be quick bursts of venting) and am very short and rude with people who make the mistake of trying to communicate with me when I'm stressed out.
13. Which do you value more: compassion or justice?
Justice, because I am so concerned with things being fair. It drives me crazy to see certain people getting away with things that are just wrong or taking advantage of others because they're rich or powerful. I do consider myself a very compassionate person, though -- in fact, I think it's feeling compassion that sometimes causes me to get so riled up when I see people being treated unfairly.
14. Would you say that you're a child at heart, or that you have an old soul?
Child at heart. I enjoy a lot of simple things, I love goofing around and playing games, and I kind of feel like like I'm just pretending to be an adult when I host a party or something. I'm well into my twenties -- should I really be so thrilled about my boss giving me a little stuffed Golden Snitch for my birthday? I'm so not ready to grow up yet.
15. Which Hogwarts House do you think that the Sorting Hat would place you in?
Ravenclaw, the house of wit and learning: well, I think I possess wit even though only a very small group of people seem to share that view, I was a good student (even with the procrastination) and I love to learn. Slytherin seems all wrong for me, and as for Gryffindor, I don't think I'm that brave, though every once in awhile I've been told differently. Hufflepuff is a possibility, because I am very loyal and somewhat hard-working. But when I first read the Sorting Hat's song, I suspected I'd be placed in Ravenclaw. Maybe I'm a Ravenpuff?
