I am new to this community and I am new to stamping. It is not very diffused over here (Italy) :-( I am writing to ask for advice. I have recently purchased these two items:
I have that tool and find it very difficult to use myself, so I don't think you're doing anything wrong.
Go to an art supply store and get yourself a paper stump such as this. I took a metal embossing class and that's what we used with these type of plates. It's much smoother. The big fat stump is a good one.
The Ten Seconds Studio site has lots of tools and info, too, that might be helpful, even though they mostly do metal embossing.

Also make sure you have something under it like foam to absorb the "shock" to the paper as you emboss.
