The Passing of an Icon

I'm very sad to hear of the death at age 85 of James Doohan, the actor best known as chief engineer of the U.S.S. Enterprise, Commander (and in later incarnations of his character, Captain) Montgomery Scott.

Even though it's said that no one ever actually uttered the phrase "Beam me up, Scotty" on Star Trek, he has entered our cultural lexicon ( Read more... )

When I picked that icon, I knew someone would say that. :-)

The symbol itself did originate on TOS, though, embroidered on the uniforms of the Enterprise crew. In those days, however, each ship appeared to have its own insignia. By the time TNG rolled around, Enterprise's insignia was being used for Starfleet as a whole, for whatever reason.
