summary: He's always there, right there, by your side.
He’s always there, always always there; always there for you; it used to make you wonder why, why would he be wasting his time with someone like you, someone as thin and frail and as shy as you are, because he’s the complete opposite, everything he is is at odds with everything you are. Where you’re thin, he has muscles - you know he likes to work out - and where you’re frail, he’s strong; where you’re a little shy, he’s loud and boisterous and playful.
He’s absolutely everything you’re not, and yet, he’s always there, by your side, and he always has been. From almost the moment you two first met, first started talking - although admittedly he was doing more of the talking then than you were - you’d been friends. At the time, you weren’t sure how, or why, and even now you don’t have any answers to those questions, but it doesn’t really matter anymore, because he’s there, he’s right here and you know he’s going to be around for a good long time.
‘You’ll never get rid of me now,’ he had joked one evening, when you’d rather casually mentioned the fact that he was almost always around. ‘Stubborn like a bull, I am. No escape for you.’ He’d laughed, he laughs a lot, and sometimes you think it has to be one of your favourite sounds. But then, isn’t almost anything he says - especially your name, whispered softly in the dark - your favourite sound.
You never say it explicitly, yet everyone knows anyway, that he’s your favourite; out of all the other trainees and your other friends, he comes top of the list, he always has, and you’re pretty sure he always will. You know you’re his favourite too, though, you know you’re the one he goes to talk to first, you’re the one he saves his brightest smile for, and you’re the one he holds close, the one his touches mean more than just simple friendship with.
Nothing much of any of this gets said between you two, but then, it doesn’t need to, because already he’s come to know you practically inside out - better than you know yourself, you suspect - and already you’ve learnt what the expression on his face means or how he feels just by the tone of his voice. So you don’t need to tell him how you feel, because you know he already knows just by the look in your eyes, and he never needs to say any such things to you either, because you can tell, just by the way he drapes an arm over your shoulder or brushes his fingers through your hair.
It’s hard, sometimes, doing what you’re being trained to do, it’s a strain and its stressful and its tiring and sometimes it hurts, physically, mentally, all over, and sometimes you wonder what life might be like if you hadn’t been accepted, hadn’t tried to get in, but then you hear him call your name and wave you over, tell you some kind of stupid joke and see his smile, and that’s all you need to remind you just why you’re here, and why you’re staying here, and why you’re not going to quit and give up your dream.
He’s your strength, your mountain, the thing that keeps you going sometimes when all you want to do is give in and sleep. He does so much for you, without even realising, and you can only hope you’re doing just as much for him in return, that your smile means just as much to him as his means to you. You think it does though, that it must.
Not many people get to see the other side to him, the side you get to see, and it makes you feel special, but then, almost everything he does or says to you makes you feel special. But no one gets to see the special smile that he reserves only for you; no one gets to feel just how gentle he can be when he holds you tightly in his arms, and no one else gets to know just how soft his lips actually are, when he kisses you gently in the darkness, whispering your name, and you whisper his back.
He’s there, he’s always there, right there, always by your side, lending you his strength when you need it, and you hope that he always will be, right there, by your side.
