“Have you eaten yet?” Sungmin asks him. Shindong shakes his head no, and with a sweet smile on his face, Sungmin offers to cook for him.
Sungmin always liked cooking. It used to be something he would do with his mother, one of their ways of spending time together, bonding. Now he likes to cook, not only because it reminds him of her, but because he likes to see people enjoying what he’s made. Every smile, every compliment, every “mmm” he gets makes Sungmin feel good.
But he especially likes to cook for Shindong, because he especially likes Shindong’s happy smiles, aimed just at him. The others will smile at him too, when he cooks for them, they’ll enjoy the food and thank him for it, but there’s something special, something a little extra, in Shindong’s smile. It makes Sungmin feel warm and giddy inside.
“Anyone would think you’re trying to make me even bigger,” Shindong jokes one afternoon, after Sungmin has made a pie.
Sungmin shakes his head, smiling brightly over at his friend. “I just like to make you smile, is all.” If Sungmin hadn’t looked away just then, as a blush threatened to spill over his cheeks, he would have noticed Shindong carrying a slight blush of his own.
After they’ve eaten, Sungmin likes to sit cuddled up on the couch with his friend. He likes it when Shindong holds him, because it makes him feel warm, safe, comfortable. The way Shindong smiles at him tells Sungmin that he likes it just as much.
Sungmin never really expected to fall in love. He never really thought he wanted to, either. Sure, there were the good bits about it, the companionship, the comfort, and all of that. But there was also the pain, the promise of heartache, hurt. Sungmin had always thought he’d much prefer to be alone, than to go through any of that. Surely love wasn’t worth it to put yourself through such things.
But lately, he’d changed his mind. Because, for the first time, the first real time, Sungmin thought he was in love. He wanted to catch hold of every single smile Shindong sent him, and lock them all in his heart, to keep and savour. He wanted to keep Shindong’s warm arms around him forever, and let himself drown in his friend’s hold. He wanted to let himself melt into Shindong’s kiss, never coming up for air, never having to part from him. He wanted to feed his soul on the things Shindong made him feel.
For the first time, Sungmin wanted to be consumed by his feelings, feelings he would usually keep at bay, keep hidden and restricted. But Shindong’s cheerful smile and bright laugh washed away those old thoughts, and brought new ones, new feelings, in.
Sungmin goes to ask Shindong if he’s eaten yet that day, but he’s surprised by the sight he finds in the kitchen.
“I thought it was about time I cooked for you, instead,” Shindong explains, with a toothy smile.
Sungmin can’t help but smile back, feeling good, so good and so warm, inside. He hadn’t wanted to fall in love, but Shindong’s smile was so easy to fall into, he just couldn’t help it.
He didn’t mind anymore, anyway. He knew he could fall, because Shindong would be there to catch him.
