Author's Notes: Friendship fic as usual. In fact, this one was really about what it means to have friends there for each other. I've been through times like these, and it great to know you have friends who care (:

Donghae’s father had just passed away. It was so sudden, Donghae couldn’t believe it. In front of the press and his members, he had remained quiet and emotionless, but every night, he cried his eyes out when no one was looking. He regretted leaving home in the first place to become an entertainer, he regretted not spending enough time with his family.

After the funeral, Donghae returned to Seoul as Super Junior resumed activities. Everything appeared to be fine on the surface, but actually, Donghae felt as if he was putting on a mask. He hated pretending to be happy and cheerful while performing, when on the inside, he was holding back his resentment towards his occupation. Subsequently, this affected his performance and he began to make mistakes.

Eeteuk had sat down to have a good chat with Donghae, in an attempt to understand what was going on. Apparently, this failed as Donghae refused to reveal anything, and just pretended everything was fine. This led Eeteuk to feel worried about Donghae. Knowing Heechul and Donghae were pretty close, Eeteuk asked Heechul to keep an eye on him.

Then one night, Donghae suddenly asked Heechul out for a drink. Going to the nearby roadside stall, they just sat there and drank bottles of soju, without saying a word. Donghae was drinking more than usual, he was gulping everything down rapidly. Heechul had tried to stop him, but Donghae just pushed him aside. In the end, Heechul just sat back and watched the other guy drown his sorrows in alcohol.

It came to a point when Donghae was dead drunk, and he started blurting out everything. Heechul being Heechul, just sat there and listened to Donghae blabber, while rolling his eyes every once in awhile.

“Hyung… I want to quit. I want to go home. I hate this place. I hate this job. I hate… everything. I want to go home. I want to be with my mom, my brother.” As Donghae blabbered on and on, tears started rolling down his face.

Finally it came to a point where Heechul couldn’t take it, and he flared up.

“What do you mean you can’t take it anymore? All of us have been through the same thing. I know you lost your dad but that doesn’t give you an excuse to wallow in self pity. Your dad wanted you to be a singer. You did it for him, you did it for yourself. He wouldn’t want you to give up even after he’s gone. So quit acting like this, when you feel like crap, all of us feel like crap too. We’re a team for goodness sake!”

The response he got was more loud wails from a drunken Donghae, which showed his message had kinda sunk in.

Heechul then softened his voice as he gave Donghae a hug. He knew that despite Donghae needing a wakeup call, he needed some comfort too.

“Don’t keep it all inside, just tell us, we’ll listen. After all, we’re brothers. We’re all in this together.”

Donghae snuggled in deeper into Heechul’s embrace, and Heechul winced slightly as he didn’t really like the close contact. Still, he remained hugging Donghae and only let go when Donghae had calmed down and fallen asleep. He knew Donghae was a more sensitive person who needed loads of reassurance.

The next day, Donghae awoke to find himself in his room, Eunhyuk’s favorite stuffed monkey in his hands. The bed opposite was empty, indicating Eunhyuk was already awake. At his bedside table was a note: “Cheer up! I need my fishie back. Lent you my monkey, hope you feel better. Love, Eunhyuk.”

Donghae’s head throbbed heavily, a reminder of how much he had drunk the night before. As he struggled to remember what had happened before he passed out. He couldn’t remember how he got home, how he ended up in his bed, he couldn’t even recall Eunhyuk passing his monkey to him. Donghae realised he could only remember an image of being held in someone’s arms. But he could only remember Heechul being there, and hugging was something that was unlike Heechul’s usual behavior.

Groggily, Donghae walked out into the hallway to see Eeteuk walking out from his room.

“Oh, Donghae, you’re awake. You were pretty knocked out when Heechul brought you back here, he left early for his drama schedule. Are you feeling better? Hangeng’s cooking some porridge for you now.”

Donghae glanced over into the kitchen and saw Hangeng bent over the stove, stirring something in a pot. Hangeng saw Donghae looking at him and gave him a wave.

He thought over what Eeteuk had said… Wait, did that mean that the person who hugged him was Heechul? Heechul who practically hated skinship?

Eeteuk continued: “I spoke to manager hyung, and managed to convince him to excuse you from today’s activities. Go take a good rest and feel better - you really need it. We’ll manage without you for today.”

Donghae felt guilt creeping in, he didn’t want to burden the members.

Eeteuk seemed to sense that and quickly replied: “Don’t worry, just take that rest. All of us feel better when you’re feeling better too. We want our old Donghae back.”

That was enough for Donghae, and he regretted ever considering leaving the group. Eeteuk, Hangeng, Heechul, Eunhyuk, they cared for him. And he knew that the other members did too, even though they were unable to show it. Heechul was right, they were a team, and they were brothers. Not by blood, but by the love they had for each other.

Donghae burst into tears, which shocked Eeteuk as they were really sudden. Not knowing what to do, he stretched out his arms to hug Donghae, and Donghae snuggled in.

“Thanks Hyung. Thanks for being our leader, thanks for being so understanding. Thanks for everything…”
