Help wanted...

Dec 30, 2004 16:00

This summer I'm contemplating a hostessing job at a chain restaurant, i.e. Outback, Bertucci's, Chili's, etc. Has anyone worked anywhere like that? If so, do they hire for only 2/3 months? How was it (pay, people, stress...)? Thanks in advance guys!

it really depends on the restaurant you work at. at tequila grande, pay isnt that great, like i started at 5.15 an hour and after the first 6 hours of training, *which i got paid for, my boss says anytime we are there doing work we should get paid even if its only for meetings and classes etc.* but then i got moved up to 5.50. and since my boss likes me and im a good worker she gave me a raise to $6. most restaurants start you off at minimum wage unless they are seriously shorthanded and are trying to coaxe people into working there. in any restaurant there are off days and busy days. mostly its in a set schedule so you will have days you know are going to be busy, and days you know are going to be slow. i.e. mondays and sundays are mostly really slow whereas fridays and saturdays are really busy. stress depends on the hours you work and how you get along with your boss(es) and coworkers basically so you cant predict that. and as for the 2-3 month time period? discuss it with your boss before they hire you and let them know that this ( ... )

GOD THERE'S AN AWFUL SMELL IN HERE.

i've never worked at either but i'm assuming the waitressing thing will be a little complicated at times cuz yknow when there's asshole customers and short tempers floating around.... i'd love to work at chili's i love it there.

watch out if you work at a chain ice cream place with managers that don't care if you eat... everything. you'll get fat. (i don't mean you specifically but ONE will get fat if they are around ice cream 24/7)
besides it sucks because you constantly are covered in ice cream, with sticky hands. *shudders*
ever since i worked at friendlys, i've not had a craving for ice cream.

My sister worked at Nizam's at the GreenBriar shopping center, she really liked it, she met a lot of nice guys (they were like forty with wives and children, ha) there didn't seem to be a lot of stress, then again Nizam's isn't a chain restaurant. She worked every night, only because she was the only hostess and she had nothing else to do, though working everyday or most of the week can really drain your energy.

Also consider the free dinner or something like that, but beware, you learn things about this business... like how "your wait? oh about 10-15 minutes" is to keep you there, they have no idea what the wait is some of the time... or how "we're out of the steak tartar" really means they're saving it for their regulars.

A lot of what Cae and John said is great, follow their advice, i'm only a secondary source.
